Wooloroo Dome

In a region renowned for its opal mining, Lightning ridge is an arid environment in the far north of New South Wales. Occupying a site on the outskirts of the town is a traditional community gathering space which is now also the home of ‘The Hungry Spirit’ a community focused enterprise exploring permaculture, regenerative living and healing. In what can be a challenging environment it is also the home of the client who are the stewards of ‘The Hungry Spirit’ and who have commissioned Konar Architects to design their new abode. In keeping with the client’s focus on inventiveness and sustainable living the form of a light weight geodesic dome was chosen as the most appropriate construction. The dome form has the maximum volume for the least surface area making it well suited to the hot arid environment. The dwelling is to be constructed as a cluster of three geodesic domes reminiscent of giant opals set in an oasis garden. To be constructed of lightweight tubular steel a tensile fabric cladding will provide the necessary weather protection which will also be puncuated by windows both opening and fixed to provide both ventilation and light. The largest central dome will contain the living, kitchen and laundry spaces as well as a mezzanine floor to be the main bedroom and ensuite. Each of the two smaller domes will contain bedrooms and a bathroom. A large breeze room walled with flyscreen will provide a cool, ventilated and shaded space on the northern elevation. Appearing as a giant earth ship, the entire northern side is proposed to be sheltered by large shade sails to mitigate the facade from the sun’s rays. For additional climate control, the whole dome is to be mounted upon a raised ventilated deck which also offers an abundance of outdoor living space.

This project represents an adventurous, innovative and exciting prospect and which is adapted to the character and environment of the region’s latitude.
